Day 4 of 2019’s Golf Product Buzzwords

How do you come up with a great product name? You know, one that intrigues the consumer, yet also implants something desirable in the mind of the potential purchaser, without including overused industry jargon. Well, it isn’t easy and generally isn’t accomplished by deleting vowels from a word to create a cutesy shortened version of the word.

As I have said before, the name of a product can make or break it. Those that have tried to name 5+ new products have more than likely come to the realization that it should be left to a name consultant, and those “in the know” can generally tell whether a new product name is the result of some amateurish company-wide name generation contest versus the product of a name consultant.

Today’s entry in the field of 2019 golf product names is the name CNCPT, for golf clubs. Yes, apparently a version of the word “concept” with the vowels eliminated.

What do you think, is the name ‘CNCPT” the product of a naming expert or a hack? Let me know in the comments.

Also, guess which of the club makers plans to launch a CNCPT line of clubs.

This bit of insight brought to you by the trademark office and the following trademark application:

Word Mark      CNCPT

Goods and Services     Golf clubs and headcovers

Serial Number 87761933

Filing Date       January 19, 2018

What do I thing regarding the expert or hack question? I would bet on hack, solely because of the amateurish deletion of the vowels (not a fan of this strategy). I am actually somewhat fond of the name “concept” as opposed to the overused term “prototype,” but frankly no one should be able to lock-up the use of the word “concept” for a product name, any more than the word “prototype.” Limiting myself to 3 minutes of thought, what are better names that convey a similar message to the consumer? How about… “theory” or “solution.”
