The Strike N Swipe Patent Application Publishes

Remember the Strike N Swipe reusable impact tape from The Golf Channel’s “Fore Inventors Only” show? If not, check out the impressive Strike N Swipe website, complete with David Leadbetter endorsement. In my prior posts (here, and here) I affectionately referred to the product as the million dollar reusable impact tape because on the show the inventor explained that he had almost one million dollars invested in the product (which blew me away).

The following was my review of the Strike N Swipe from the very first episode:

11) The Million Dollar Reusable Impact Tape (sensitive enough that it works for putting)

Panel: pass
The IP Golf Guy’s Evaluation:

Marketability: par
Protectability: par
Notes: I don’t know how large the impact tape market is, but I can’t imagine how this guy will ever recoup his million dollar investment!

Then, the Big Break Contestants provided their thoughts on the product during the 4th episode:

10) Strike N Swipe Impact Tape

Big Break Contestants’ Comments: “Very simple.” “Very creative.” “I think it is a very good invention.”
Ramblings of The IP Golf Guy: Interesting product, but the potential market just seems so limited. I hope this inventor can at least recoup his million dollar investment. After all, I know a lot of golfers, yet I don’t know any recreational golfers that have spent more than $10 on impact tape in their whole life.

a. Strike N Swipe (the million dollar reusable impact tape): It doesn’t take up much shelf space and probably has a pretty nice margin. Has a decent “buzz” about it from the show. I would consider putting it on the shelf knowing that the “buzz” will be gone in 12 months. I would give it a couple months in a display by the check-out line.

So, why the walk down memory lane? A few weeks ago the Strike N Swipe patent application published as US Pub. No. 20080153617 titled “Sports Impact Point Indicator.” The application describes the invention as:

A sports impact point indicator of planar form has a rear surface with a contact adhesive for adhering the indicator to the face of a golf club or bat, and the indicator is sized to cover a major portion of the face of the club or bat. The indicator comprises an upper sheet and base layer which are releasably adhesive together under pressure such that they will adhere together at the impact point when the club or bat is used to strike a ball, to indicate the impact point. The indicator can be erased by wiping a user finger or thumb across it top surface.

And, the application contains the following drawings:

Boy, a few of those extreme heel impacts look like they were taken right from my clubs!

Good luck to the inventors of the Strike N Swipe, I hope they recoup their investment (which, given that the Strike N Swipe appears to be sold in a lot of online golf shops, they just might do). Congratulations.
